Meet Dr. Philip Grubbs

Board-Certified. Dr. Philip Grubbs is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Choosing a plastic surgeon who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery is an assurance of medical expertise in the specialty of plastic surgery.

Certification is a voluntary process. To become certified, a doctor must have graduated from an accredited medical school and completed at least five years of additional accredited training as a resident surgeon, including at least two years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. The doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams. Re-certification by examination and proof of continuing education is required every ten years.

Dr. Grubbs has exceeded the board’s minimum residency training requirements by fulfilling a complete general surgery residency of five years, and an additional two-year plastic surgery program, as well as two further years as a surgical research fellow.

Board Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only official recognition by which a physician can call him or herself a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Education and Medical Background

  • Graduated from Austin College in Sherman, TX then attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas
  • Completed two-year Surgical Research Fellowship
  • Completed a full five-year General Surgery Residency at Penn State University Hospital, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
  • Completed an accredited Plastic Surgery Residency Program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
  • In 1994, moved with his family to Blacksburg and founded Plastic Surgery Center of Virginia, and has been in continuous solo practice in the New River Valley.
